Automatic driveway gates in Pakenham.

Sliding or swing, what the run-back rule means for your driveway, the safety devices that are not optional, and why the electrical trench is the line item that decides your price.

Sliding or swing: measure the run-back first.

Before you think about motors, remotes or colours, go and measure one thing. Stand at your driveway opening and look along the fence line to one side. A sliding gate needs clear, flat space alongside the driveway roughly equal to the opening width plus about 300mm. So a 4.5 metre opening needs about 4.8 metres of clear fence line for the gate to slide into, and clear means clear: no garden bed, no water meter, no tree, no bin store, no down pipe. If you have got it, the decision is basically made.

Sliding wins on most Pakenham blocks that can take it. It never swings out over the footpath, which matters enormously on the tighter suburban frontages through Officer and the newer estates. It handles a driveway that rises away from the street, where a swinging leaf would foul on the rise partway through its arc. And it deals with wind far better, because a swing gate is a sail hanging off a hinge and our prevailing south-westerly gets a full grip on it, while a sliding gate is running in a track and does not present the same lever.

Swing is the answer when the run-back is not there. On a wide opening that usually means two leaves rather than one, and the leaves must open inward, onto your property, never out over the footpath. On a sloping driveway a swing gate needs a carefully checked arc, and on a steep one it needs the hinges set to rise, which is a fabrication decision not an afterthought. It is also the cheaper option on narrow openings and it looks right on the rural frontages out toward Maryknoll and Nar Nar Goon where a pair of gates set back from the road is the traditional look.

Whichever way you go, the gate posts are not fence posts. A 4.5m sliding gate is 150-250kg of steel cantilevering off a post that also carries a motor's operating loads, and it does that ten times a day for twenty years. We set gate posts substantially deeper and heavier than the adjacent run: typically 900mm to 1000mm with a 400mm plug in N20, on the reactive Cardinia clay for the same reasons we set every post deep out here, explained on our post depth page. A gate post that moves 5mm makes the gate stop closing, and that is a repair you cannot do without breaking concrete.

The safety devices, and the electrician you cannot skip.

A powered gate is a machine that moves a couple of hundred kilograms through the space your children walk through. That is not a dramatic framing, it is just what it is, and it is why AS/NZS 60335.2.103, the standard covering drive units for gates, doors and windows, exists. A compliant install has to limit the force the gate can exert, and it has to detect and reverse when something is in the way. In practice that means a photoelectric beam across the opening that reverses the gate the instant it is broken, and on many installs a pressure-sensitive safety edge on the leading edge as well. The motor's own force setting gets adjusted and tested at commissioning, not left at whatever the box shipped with.

We test the beam in front of you at handover by walking through the closing gate. If a quote you are holding does not list safety beams as a line item, they are not in the price, and you are being sold a machine without its guard. Ask.

The electrical work is not ours to do. Running 240V mains to a gate is electrical work under AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules. It must be carried out by a licensed electrician, who issues a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the installation when it is done. We are a fencing contractor: we fabricate and hang the gate, set the posts, mount and commission the motor and set up the low-voltage safety devices, and we bring a licensed electrician in for the supply. That is not us being cautious, it is the law. If somebody quotes you a gate job and offers to run the mains themselves as part of it, they are doing unlicensed electrical work, there will be no CES, and your insurer will take a very close interest in that fact after any incident. Power outages. Every compliant motor has a manual release, normally a keyed lever or a cover that disengages the drive so you can push the gate by hand. You are never trapped. But you are out of the car in the rain doing it. On the rural feeders around Nar Nar Goon, Maryknoll and Pakenham Upper, outages are more frequent and longer than suburban supply, so on any gate that is the only vehicle access to a property we fit a battery backup, which gives you fifteen to twenty cycles for about $250-400. On genuinely remote gates a solar panel and battery removes the trench cost entirely, which on a 60 metre run can be the cheaper answer overall.

A real worked example, and what Council actually cares about.

A 4.5 metre sliding gate, Colorbond-clad to match the boundary fence, on an acreage block off the Pakenham Upper side. The switchboard is at the house, twenty-five metres from the gate.

Gate fabrication, 4.5m sliding frame with Colorbond infill to match the existing run, $2,400. Gate posts, bottom track and rack, set at 950mm depth in N20, $700. Sliding motor rated for the leaf weight, two remotes, photoelectric safety beams and commissioning, $1,450. Licensed electrician: 25 metres of trench, conduit, supply, isolator and Certificate of Electrical Safety, $1,100. Keypad on a pedestal at the driveway, $380. Total $6,030 including GST, which sits in the upper half of our published $3,500-7,500 motorised gate band exactly where you would expect a rural install with a long trench to sit.

Notice where the money is. The electrical trench is $1,100 of a $6,030 job, and it is the line that moves most between quotes. On a suburban Officer block with a power source in the garage six metres away, that line drops to $400-500 and the same gate comes in around $5,300. On a block where the gate is sixty metres from the board, it goes past $2,000 and solar starts to look sensible. When you compare gate quotes, compare what each one assumes about the power run, because that is usually where the difference is hiding, not in the motor.

What Cardinia Shire cares about. The gate itself usually needs no permit, but two rules bite regularly. First, nothing may open over or encroach onto the footpath or road reserve. That single rule kills more outward-swinging gate designs on tight suburban frontages than anything else, and we redesign at quote stage rather than at install. Second, corner lots: the corner splay sightline provisions restrict what can go near the intersection, and a solid gate and its posts count towards that. Anything over 2 metres high, or on a designated splay, needs a building permit under the Building Regulations 2018. We check both before we quote and we tell you which one applies. The Cardinia Shire requirements are the same across the corridor but the frontage geometry is not, so it is always a site call.

One last thing. If the gate is going into a pool barrier, none of the above is the governing rule: AS 1926.1 is, and a pool gate has to self-close and self-latch from any position including 10mm ajar, which is a different design problem entirely. See our AS 1926.1 page. For everything else, our gates and automation service page covers the hardware options, and if the gate is going into a paddock or acreage line, the rural and acreage fencing page covers what it is hanging off.

Frequently asked: driveway gate automation in Pakenham.

How much does an automatic driveway gate cost in Pakenham?

$3,500 to $7,500 installed for a motorised swing or slide, and where you land is decided by gate width and how far the power is from the gate. A 3.6m single swing on a suburban block with a power point in the garage twenty metres away sits near the bottom. A 4.5m sliding gate on a rural block with the switchboard sixty metres up the driveway sits at the top, because the trench is a real cost. A manual gate with no automation is $1,200-2,800. Retrofitting automation to a gate not designed for it usually costs more than doing it at the start.

Sliding or swing gate for my Pakenham block?

Measure your run-back first. A sliding gate needs clear flat space alongside the driveway roughly equal to the opening width plus about 300mm, so a 4.5m opening needs about 4.8m of clear fence line with no garden bed, meter box or tree in it. If you have that, slide wins on almost every Pakenham block: it never swings over the footpath, it copes with a rising driveway that would foul a swinging leaf, and it handles wind better because it is not a sail on a hinge. Without the run-back, swing is the answer, and wider openings mean two leaves.

Do I need an electrician for a gate motor?

For the 240V supply, always. Running mains to a gate is electrical work under AS/NZS 3000 and must be done by a licensed electrician, who issues a Certificate of Electrical Safety. We build and hang the gate, mount the motor and set up the low-voltage safety devices, and we bring in a licensed electrician for the supply. Anyone offering to run the mains themselves as part of a fencing job is doing unlicensed electrical work, your insurer will take an interest after an incident, and you should get a different quote.

What happens to an automatic gate when the power goes out?

Every compliant motor has a manual release, usually a keyed lever or a cover that disengages the drive so you can push the gate by hand, so you are never locked in. You are just standing in the rain doing it, which is why we fit a battery backup on any gate that is the only vehicle access. Rural feeders around Nar Nar Goon, Maryknoll and Pakenham Upper drop more often and for longer than suburban supply. A backup giving fifteen to twenty cycles is about $250-400 fitted, and on a solar gate the battery is the system anyway.

Do I need a Cardinia Shire permit for a driveway gate?

Usually not for the gate itself, but two rules bite. Nothing may open over or encroach onto the footpath or road reserve, which rules out an outward swing on a tight suburban frontage and is the most common reason we redesign at quote stage. And on a corner lot the corner splay sightline provisions limit what goes near the intersection, with a solid gate and its posts counting. A fence or gate over 2 metres, or one on a designated splay, needs a building permit under the Building Regulations 2018. We check both before we quote.

Send us a photo of your driveway.

One photo along the fence line tells us whether you have got the run-back for a slider, and a photo of your switchboard tells us what the trench will cost. That is most of the quote before we even come out.
