Cardinia is not all new estates. Climb up out of the corridor and you are into the lifestyle and grazing country around Pakenham Upper, Beaconsfield Upper, Gembrook and Maryknoll — acreage blocks, hobby farms and rural frontages that need fencing built to a completely different brief from a suburban boundary. We do that work: post-and-rail for presentation, hinged-joint and plain wire for stock, and the gates and strainer assemblies that tie a long run together.

Out here the deciding factor is exposed paddock wind loading. A fence that would be fine in a sheltered Cardinia Lakes backyard will work itself loose on an open ridge if it is not built for the wind. We use closer post spacings, deeper footings, properly braced corner and strainer assemblies and correctly tensioned wire so the whole line stays tight. Our clay-reactive soils get the same respect they do in town — the right footing depth so posts do not heave.

Types and what it costs.

Most rural fencing is priced per lineal metre. As a 2026 guide, wire stock fencing runs about $18–$40 per lineal metre and timber post-and-rail roughly $70–$130 per lineal metre, supplied and installed. A worked example: a 200-metre stock boundary at $28 per metre is around $5,600, before rock, gates or extra strainer assemblies. We often combine a presentable rail frontage with practical wire on the back paddocks.

Standards and permits.

Standard stock and boundary fencing generally needs no building permit, but any fence over 2.1 metres or one that retains soil brings in VBA registration and NCC boundary rules, with Cardinia Shire planning or building permits where they apply. Shared boundaries fall under the Fences Act 1968, and we Dial Before You Dig before excavating. We confirm the lot before quoting.
