Pool safety fencing in Pakenham.

A pool fence is the one part of your property where the rules are not negotiable. Every pool and spa barrier in Victoria has to comply with AS 1926.1 and the Victorian pool-barrier regulations - the four-sided isolation principle, a minimum 1.2-metre barrier, the non-climbable zone kept clear, no foot or hand holds, and a self-closing, self-latching gate that swings away from the water. The barrier must also be registered with Cardinia Shire and pass inspection.

With pool-safety compliance required across the board, and thousands of new homes going up across the Cardinia growth corridor each year, we install a lot of barriers for brand-new pools around Cardinia Lakes, Officer and Heritage Springs - as well as upgrades for older pools that no longer meet the current standard. Either way the barrier has to be safe and signed off.

Glass, aluminium and what it costs.

Frameless and semi-frameless glass gives a clean, uninterrupted view and suits modern homes; aluminium is the value option and just as compliant, powder-coated to handle our high-UV summers. As a 2026 guide, glass pool fencing runs about $300-$550 per lineal metre and aluminium about $130-$220 per lineal metre, supplied and installed. A worked example: a 20-metre glass surround at $400 per metre is roughly $8,000, gates and spigots included.

Registration and the rules that apply.

Beyond AS 1926.1, pool and spa barriers in Victoria fall under the Building Regulations 2018 and must be registered with Cardinia Shire, with periodic compliance inspections. Ask who registers the barrier and arranges the inspection so you are not left chasing paperwork after the pool is full.
